It’s the second most widely spoken language in the world. It is also called Castilian, to distinguish it from other languages spoken in Spain. It is recognised as an official language in Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Ecuador, Mexico, Uruguay and Cuba, among others. Spanish is spoken by around 580 million people worldwide (7.6% of the population). By 2060, the United States is expected to become the second Spanish-speaking country behind Mexico.
